INSTALLATION
Limitations:
ZAXXON Flooring should NOT be used in the following areas:
-
Commercial kitchens and commercial food processing areas
-
Heavy industrial and exterior areas
-
Hospital operating rooms
-
Where pointed spikes such as golf or track shoes will be used
-
Where the floor will be subjected to unusually concentrated static or dynamic
loads
-
External/Outdoor locations or in unheated locations
ZAXXON is suitable for application over:
-
Concrete, terrazzo, and other dry, structurally sound monolithic subfloors,
which are suspended or on grade
-
Suspended wood subfloor construction with approved wood underlayments, and a
minimum of 18" of well-ventilated air space below
-
Certain metals
-
Radiant-heated subfloors with a maximum surface temperature of 85F (29¢XC).
Please note that ZAXXON is suitable for use with underfloor heating, which
should be switched off for 48 hours before and after installation.
ZAXXON is unsuitable for application over:
-
Existing resilient floors that are not smooth and securely adhered to the
subfloor. (In these cases, the existing resilient floor must be removed, and
the subfloor re-leveled. Some older resilient floors and adhesives once made by
other manufacturers can contain asbestos - in cases of doubt when removing
existing tiles, contact the relevant local authority for advice on removal and
disposal of flooring products containing asbestos). Instead of removal,
covering the existing resilient floor with a 1 / 4" plywood may be an
alternative
-
Chipwood pressboard or other than "underlayment grade" particleboard.
-
Subfloors where excessive moisture or alkali is present
-
On-grade or below-grade sleeper-constructed wood subfloors
-
Lightweight aggregate concrete subfloors having a density of less than 90 lbs
per cu. ft (1441 kg/m) or cellular concrete having a plastic (wet) density less
than 100 lbs per cu. ft (1602 kg/m)[94 lbs per cu. ft (1506 kg/m) dry weight],
or concrete having a compressive strength of less than 3500 psi (24 Mpa).
Concrete slabs with heavy static and/or dynamic loads should have higher design
strengths and densities calculated to accommodate such loads. Concrete curing
agents, sealers, hardeners, or parting agents should be removed
Preparation:
Read these installation instructions, those on the adhesive, and the MSDS
thoroughly prior to installation.
To ensure good quality appearance and adhesion of our products, the subfloor
must be hard, smooth, clean, dry, and free from defects.
Subfloors/underlayments must be free from paint, varnish, solvents, wax, oil,
existing adhesive residue, or other foreign matter. The use of a suitable
leveling compound in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction will ensure
that no irregularities show through to the surface of the finished floor. For
all installations, ZAXXON recommends the use of latex-modified Portland
cement-based compounds or underlayments which have a minimum compressive
strength of 3,500 psi for filling, smoothing or leveling subfloor
imperfections. Direct to earth concrete and stone sub-floors must incorporate
an effective damp proof membrane to ensure that they are sufficiently dry.
Concrete (new): Must be allowed to dry thoroughly since the new concrete can
contain a high percentage of residual moisture. If it is impractical to wait
until the base has fully dried, the use of a suitable surface damp-proof
membrane is acceptable. Note that, once fully cured, this membrane must be
primed before a water-based self-leveling compound is applied. The supplier of
a leveling compound will advise on a suitable primer.
Concrete (old): must be cleaned of all paint, grease, wax and any other foreign
matter. A suitable leveling compound should then be used to produce a smooth
and level surface, with good bonding between concrete and leveling compound.
Terrazzo/Stone: worn or damaged areas must be repaired. The surface must be
thoroughly cleaned and may require leveling using a suitable leveling compound.
Wood: must be overlaid with minimum 1/4" exterior grade plywood, which must be
suitably secured. All joints must be filled with a suitable smoothing compound
to ensure that a good quality surface is produced.
Moisture Test On Subfloor
Calcium Chloride (or Relative Humidity) Tests for moisture must be conducted. We recommend a guideline of a maximum acceptable moisture emission level of 5.0 lbs per 1000 sq ft. per 24 hours, according to the Calcium Chloride test...and 80% RH in the Relative Humidity Test. Bond Test should be conducted for compatibility with substrate. When testing for alkalinity, the allowable readings for the installation of Ionique flooring are 5 to 9 on the pH scale.
Temperature and Storage Conditions:
Temperature shall be maintained at a minimum of 65F (16¢XC) and a maximum of
100F (38¢XC) for 48 hours prior to installation, during installation and 48
hours after completion when using ZAXXON K-167 Vinyl Floor Tile Adhesive.
When using ZAXXON K-167 Vinyl Floor Tile Adhesive or other Epoxy Adhesives, the
temperature shall be maintained at a minimum of 65 F (29 C) for 48 hours prior
to and during installation and for 48 hours after completion.
Tiles must be stored flat. Condition all flooring material and adhesives to
room temperature at least 48 hours prior to starting installation. Protect all
materials from direct flow of heat from hot-air registers, radiators, or other
heating fixtures and appliances.
Installation:
Stir any liquid on the surface into the adhesive and then full spread the
adhesive using recommended trowel.
For porous and non-porous substrates, follow manufacturer's recommendations for
open time, working time, trowels, spread rate, clean up and how long to avoid
traffic after installation.
After Installation:
Do not walk on tiles freshly installed for 5-6 hours. Clean away excessive
adhesive before it is allowed to dry. It is preferable to protect the floor
from heavy traffic for 24 hours after installation. Floors must not be washed
for 48 hours.
Recommended Adhesives:
ZAXXON Flooring should be installed using ZAXXON K-167 Vinyl Floor Tile
Adhesive full spread.
ZAXXON Flooring installed in areas subjected to direct sunlight or topical
moisture, in shower rooms, in areas subject to excessive heat or moisture,
heavy rolling loads or high traffic, or adjacent to plate glass windows must be
installed with ZAXXON E-268 epoxy adhesive. Thoroughly read and follow the
detailed in structions on the adhesive label.
